Just A Quick Check-In

Hello people of blogland!

So, obviously it’s been awhile since I’ve posted (although I did have some reviews set up ahead of time). Here’s the skinny: My broken computer has now been fixed, which means I can now regularly post again! BUT, I’m going to temporarily hold off on new posts for a short while.

Unfortunately, I had to get a wisdom tooth removed this past Monday, and as anyone who’s had a wisdom tooth removed can tell you, it kind of sucks. It wasn’t the easiest of extractions (they had to break my tooth into 8 pieces to remove it because it wouldn’t come out) and no, I was not knocked out for the procedure… just your usual numbing shots. So as you can imagine, my mouth/jaw is super sore right now. They’ve got me on some pretty heavy pain medication, and my body doesn’t like it. I’ve been feeling super nauseous, dizzy, and tired the last few days, and I’m still recovering. So, I’m putting myself on break, at least long enough to let myself heal and get off of medication… because I’m just not functioning right now. (and don’t even get me started on how tired I am of eating mush). Hopefully I’ll be feeling better closer to the weekend.

I have a ton of new review requests queued up in my inbox to go through (I promise, I’ll get to them as soon as I can) and then I’ll be back to reading and reviewing. Right now, using my computer or my kindle to read leaves me feeling motion sick, so I’m going to take the time to heal up before I jump back into things. I hope everyone has had a great couple of weeks, and I’m excited to be back!

2016 & The Winter Holidays

Oh man, it has been one hell of a long holiday season. You may have noticed that the posts have been winding down over the last few weeks—though the reviews have been on time (at least up until now) the Weekend Wrap-Ups and Free Fiction Fridays have dwindled—I promise they’ll be back. It’s just been a bit busy here lately. Unfortunately over the last week or so, I became terribly ill—having severe breathing problems until just a few days ago when I ended up stuck in an ER for 5 hours. To cut a long story short, my terrible allergies you’ve heard about time and time again spurred on a severe asthma attack, and for a terrifying few hours, I was struggling for air. I’d previously never had a severe asthma attack, so as you can imagine, I was terrified.

It’s all good now—I have meds that are keeping me breathing, though I still get winded wandering from room to room at the moment. To make matters worse my daughter picked up some kind of stomach bug while we were in the ER, and has been puking all over my house for the last 12 hours. As you can imagine, chaos has descended. So, I’m calling myself in a vacation. I’m still here, I’ll still post, but it won’t be on a regular schedule until the medical issues in my household wind down. I apologize for the delay on regular reviews and other posts, but I assure you, it is temporary. When things wind down a little more I’ll be ready to continue on as usual, bringing you brutally honest reviews with a side of some wonderful indie freebies. Keep your eyes peeled for further posts!

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful, hopefully healthier holiday season, and I hope you are enjoying the start of the new year!

New Computer Foibles & Other Things

This week has possibly been one of the most trying and busy weeks I’ve had in quite a while. A little over a week ago I came down with some sort of head cold/sore throat combo that seemed to have my name embroidered on it in gold thread. It’s been a little over a year since I’ve  been sick to any sort of degree, and I’d forgotten how much it sucks. It started with a little bit of a sore throat and a runny nose—nothing major—but turned into another spree of going deaf in one ear, which, if you click the link I just shared, you’ll understand why that terrifies me. I immediately started taking meds to try and fix things before they got out of hand…. unfortunately that lead to an even bigger problem: The mixture of allergies, head cold, and meds meant that my eyes got really dry and before I knew it, I had a pink, swollen eye. Le sigh.

All of this comes down to a week of miserable sniffly noses, splotchy red throats, and irritatingly itchy eyes that makes me want to hide in a damp, light restricted closet filled with tissues. As miserable as that is (and really, it wasn’t fun, but I was surviving like a trooper) things became complicated when my family got word that the two brand spanking new gamer PC’s we’d ordered a week or two before were finally on their way. This was joyous news! Except, we’d decided to move around the three computers in our house to separate rooms, which meant a lot of furniture rearranging, cleaning, reorganizing, and backing up of old files. To make a very long story short, I just spent the last 3 days inhaling mountains of dust (because I’ll admit it, I am the WORST when it comes to dusting. I just don’t do it. At all.) It felt like we were moving. Seriously. Couches, beds, dressers, TV’s, book shelves, desks, chairs… all of it got moved over the course of two or three days (mostly by myself because my husband has a displaced rib and a bad back that makes moving anything heavy a no-go).

For a normal person, this situation would have sucked. It was tiring. It was dusty. It involved a lot of cat hair—but for someone like me who is severely allergic to dust mites, cats, and basically everything ever—it was torture. I spent two days unable to catch my breath because the dust irritated my allergies so bad that I was in a perpetual asthma attack. It hurts to breathe right now… which also means that on top of all my other head cold related problems, I haven’t slept in two days. Double le sigh.

The good news is: everything was completed on time. I backed up my computer like a pro, got everything moved and put away, I managed to somehow not die in the process, and the new computers arrived! Everything was hooked up, my internet was turned back on, and I thought “Wow, that went smoothly. I can get back to my regular posting schedule without a blip in the radar.”

And then I realized that my new computer wasn’t recognizing my external hard drive…. the hard drive where all my artwork, music, books, photos and writing resides. Somehow during the moving of everything in my house, my external hard drive broke. My husband figured it was the shell—this is a pretty common problem, and the shell we had on the external hard drive was pretty iffy right out of the box. Whatever, I have a new, awesome computer, and we can just mount it and make it an internal drive. Problem solved! Except it wasn’t. My PC still doesn’t recognize the drive… even after adjusting the BIOS. So what does this mean? There is a 50% chance that either we were incredibly unlucky and the drive isn’t getting enough power, in which case getting a new shell will fix the problem. Or, unfortunately, my drive is dead.  I cannot tell you the amount of horror this awakens in me. I will literally bawl my eyes out if it’s dead.

I can replace my art. Mostly. It’s posted to my DeviantART account. I can replace my music (it’s just a pain). I can even replace my books if I have to (that’s an even bigger pain—I just finished replacing my hard library with e-books and cataloguing all 22k of those)…my photo’s, sadly are irreplaceable, but eh… who cares… my writing? I have backups of –almost- everything (I think)… but not Khet. My beloved Khet which I’ve spent months re-writing. Though I still have my very vague hand-written outline, the detailed typed outline that’s 23 chapters long? That, my friends, will be lost. Excuse me why I hyperventilate.

So the short of it is this: I’m sick. My new computer is awesome. I’m online and ready to post to my blog… but I may have lost my soul to the evil that is a broken hard drive. Please pray for my literary babies.

Illness Rant & Mission Accomplished!

Wow, I’ve been quiet for a few days and the messages are really starting to pile up (sorry!) It has been just… one of those weeks where things just seem to spiral out of hand. So, I thought I’d do a quick check in.

I’ve got 3 book reviews waiting to be posted (that I just can’t be bothered with at this exact moment). I promise they’re coming… maybe tomorrow.  I came down with some kind of cold over the weekend (which is eating me alive) and then proceeded to give it to my fuzzy baby (aka cat) who has been sneezing all day. Poor Imhotep! As a consequence I’ve been running a fever and have been completely exhausted for the past couple of days…but can’t seem to sleep. It’s like being on a sugar high after being awake for four days straight. So. Tired.

On the upside of things, however, I have FINALLY finished sorting out my books. It’s DONE. *cheers* That was the most tedious task I have ever undertaken. I almost don’t know what to do with myself now after working on it every waking moment of the day for the last few weeks.

Um… I forgot what I was going to talk about. I’m really tired guys. LOL I desperately need some sleep and some tylenol. The worst part about getting a cold is the subsequent sinus headache/migraine I always seem to acquire. I swear I’ll be okay if I can just get… more than 2 hours of sleep tonight. My brain no longer functions. I’ve literally slept -maybe- 9 hours in 1-2 hour bits over the past four or five days. I barely have the ability to… (lost train of thought)…I can’t think of the word I was going to use to describe what is happening right this second. Wtf. (brain has gone blank). Whatever. I’m going to bed.

If any of you see a sick person sniffling in your direction this week, run. Run for your dear lives.
