WARNING – SPOILERS MAY ENSUE BEYOND THIS POINT – REVIEW BELOW

What I loved about Metabolism Diet For Beginners by Megan Johnson McCullough is that aside from the recipes, it contained a lot of helpful science-based information on how metabolism works and the common myths diet books often portray. There were also some helpful exercise plans and instructions, not just recipes.

There were a pretty decent array of recipes, but I will warn you that the meal plans and recipes may take some adjusting to get just right for you. If you aren’t used to eating super healthy, some of the ingredients may be foreign to you. I’d encourage anyone to give them a try before writing them off. The plans are a bit restrictive feeling to me – I’m not a huge fan of diets that ask you to completely remove items from your pantry – I feel moderation is more important, and the book wasn’t real clear on why certain items were restricted. Given the in-depth look at metabolism, I think the author missed an opportunity to explain why these foods aren’t a great idea.

Ramen For Beginners by Robin Donovan is a great little recipe book if you are looking to learn how to make ramen from scratch in your kitchen. It contains both the basics as well as delving into more complicated recipes. The recipes are thorough and easy to follow but will require a run to your local Japanese supermarket (or a virtual trip to Amazon) as some of the ingredients will be difficult to find in your local chain grocery store.

WARNING – SPOILERS MAY ENSUE BEYOND THIS POINT – REVIEW BELOW

Python Programming For Beginners by Patricia Foster is an excellent introduction to Python programming for children ages 10 to 14, and even adults, like me, who sometimes need things dumbed down a bit for them. I found the book to be well-written and easy to follow. It did a good job of explaining the sometimes complex inner workings of coding into really simple concepts by relating them to things kids already understand, like ice cream, kittens, and jellybeans.

Although perhaps not as thorough as I’d like, as an adult looking into a new programming language, I think for young children/teens, this is a good resource for teaching them to think like a programmer and get them started in making their own programs and games.

Practical Magic for Beginners is a simple, yet extensive reference that teaches you about conscious conjuring using a wide range of tools, techniques, disciplines, and elements.

Whether you’re interested in chakras, astrology, talismans, dreams, or anything in between, you’ll find what you’re looking for. Discover entry-level remedies, recipes, and spells, and learn about plant magic, herbal cures for common ailments, spiritual cleansing, and more.

WARNING – SPOILERS MAY ENSUE BEYOND THIS POINT – REVIEW BELOW

I’ll be frank… I think this book was miss-titled. I went into this book expecting a guide to, well, witchcraft – spellwork, incantations, maybe a little herbalism, something about the history of witchcraft, moon phases… basically, the usual witchcraft kit of information give or take some personal views.

That isn’t what this is.

The book is well written, incredibly thorough, if lacking much of a personal touch, and covers a wide variety of topics – don’t get me wrong. It’s a useful book to have on your shelves… it’s just not so much about “magic” and witchcraft as it is general mysticism. Very little in this book is about the topics mentioned earlier. If you want to learn about Tarot, crystal healing, palm reading, or divination, this is a great resource, and those practices can certainly be an aspect of witchcraft… but recognize going in what this book is, and what it isn’t.

Description/Synopsis:

Start your journey to living better, being present, and acting with intention today. A Year of Mindfulness for Beginners is the perfect choice for people looking to internalize the practice and develop beneficial, lifelong habits.

Featuring daily doses of affirmations, exercises, meditations, and inspiring quotes, A Year of Mindfulness for Beginners helps you live in the moment and be more aware of yourself.

WARNING – SPOILERS MAY ENSUE BEYOND THIS POINT – REVIEW BELOW

A Year of Mindfulness For Beginners by Lee Papa is a neat little book if you are looking for a gift to give a friend. It is packed full of quotes, daily meditation exercises, mantras, and prompts. If you are the sort of person who finds it useful to be reminded to take time out of your day to be more mindful, this is a fantastic option for you.

That being said, I don’t think this book was for me. I found a lot of the daily prompts and meditations to be unnecessarily verbose and at times, hard to follow. I wish the book had been more thoughtful with its exercises and a bit less about “think positive thoughts”. But to each their own, you know?

There are a wide variety of recipes–some simple, some more complicated–ranging from basic milk-replacement recipes to Red Curry Chicken & Zoodle Soup. I would definitely recommend adding this cookbook to your repertoire!
