  1. It’s nice to see you describing this in ways outside of grammar. Personally, I’m known to throw grammar to the four winds for these specific punctuation tools and focus more on ‘does it make the sentence flow in the way I want it to?’ or ‘what impact does it have on interpretation?’ It’s a difficult dance that I’ve been developing ever since I got back into writing, and a constant battle with my editors who insist on destroying the emotional intention of a paragraph because it doesn’t fit ‘perfect grammar’. That’s not to say I completely ignore grammar – far from it – but there are times when deviation is useful.
